The building, the first permanent modular barracks design in the Navy, features three buildings with 53 two-person units. Construction predominately took place in a controlled factory setting in Mentone, California, and the modules were then shipped to San Clemente Island for final assembly. This innovative design reduces the logistic challenges of constructing at this offshore island, while improving quality control, enhancing safety for the workers and helping with tight schedule constraints.
The project achieved LEED Gold, utilizing energy and water efficient materials such as photovoltaic cells, solar-domestic hot water heaters, dual plumbing, advanced metering and enhanced commissioning to improve efficiency.
