San Diego-based architectural firm partners with Stellar out of Jacksonville, Fla.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Delawie has been awarded the contract to design a combined Navy Inn and Navy Exchange (NEX) facility on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. The project replaces both the existing Naval Base Coronado Navy Gateway Inns & Suites (NGIS) and NEX facilities. Delawie is partnered with Stellar (Jacksonville, Fla.), the design-builder for the project.

“Delawie is excited to be a part of this innovative project, combining the Navy Inn with a NEX,” Principal-in-Charge, Mike Asaro, Architect, shared. “This is a first of its kind facility for the Navy Exchange Service Command with the potential to impact future developments. We are grateful to continue our support of the United States military with the design of the new Navy Inn and NEX on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.”

ID3 Design (Encinitas, Calif.) leads the interior design, including finishes, furniture, and equipment selections. Coffman Engineers (San Diego, Calif.) provides multi-disciplinary engineering designer services. Crescere Design (San Marcos, Calif.) is the landscape architect.

The six-story steel framed Navy Inn will offer 200 guest rooms including suites and ADA compliant rooms. The integration of a steel structural system offers expedited constructability and reduced construction cost. Upper floors of the Navy Inn will provide views of both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay.

The 8,000 SF single-story NEX features an indoor and outdoor food court seating areas, space for food court vendors, barber shop, and tailor shop. The NEX will be accessible via an outside entrance and from an entrance inside the Navy Inn, allowing guests access to the NEX 24/7 market and coffee shop.

Delawie’s design ensures each facility complements one another, both visually and functionally with new contemporary layouts and finishes. Both share similar, yet distinct, material and color palettes. The Navy Inn and NEX share back-of-house spaces with each entity having individual entrances.

Expected completion of the combined Navy Inn and NEX project is January 2027.
